Our Fair Work Officer works across Dumfries and Galloway to engage with businesses to create awareness of and promote the core values of fair work and inclusive growth, including:

Encourage businesses to promote equality of opportunity
Use buddying and mentoring to support workers with distinctive needs
- Encourage a commitment to supporting the Real Living Wage and no exploitative zero hours contracts
- Promoting the Fair Work Framework

Education and Training
Dumfries and Galloway College is one of the most highly respected Further Education Colleges in Scotland. With over 5,000 part time learners and 1,600 full time learners accessing the wide range of services available, it is clear that Dumfries and Galloway College really does serve the needs of its local community exceptionally well. The formation of Scotland’s Rural University College (SRUC) represents a dynamic and successful approach to Higher and Further Education, high quality research and consultancy provision within a single, integrated organisation based throughout Scotland. In Dumfries and Galloway, SRUC Barony Campus offers a wide range of opportunities to the local community. Offering a range of land-based courses, the campus also provides short course training opportunities. All courses within this short course portfolio are industry led, equipping trainees with what is required for their chosen career path.

Enhancing Literacy and Numeracy Skills, Including ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages)
Ongoing changes and developments within the working environment require an increasingly literate workforce. It is estimated that literacy skills cost the UK economy £10 billion annually. Evidence suggests employees who improve their reading; writing; language; computing and number skills usually take less time off work, improve the quality of their work and show greater willingness to learn.
Help is available for your business and employees to support the development of literacy and numeracy, including ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) and Basic Computing.
Council staff working in Community Learning and Development can work with you to develop tailor made and contextualised work based literacy programmes that suit you and your employees.
